The following is a collection of notes I’ve made on a poem by al-Busti. Every Friday since we began Year 2 of Arabic Intensive we spent the last sixty to ninety minutes going over a 62 verse classic with our Arabic Literature teacher. It is commonly referred to as ‘nooniyah’ because every second verse ends with the Arabic phonetic noon sound. Each verse consists of gems to benefit from in a variety of different ways. Here are the first six verses:
(1) زيادة المرء في دنياه نقصان
(2) وربحه غير محد خير خسران
(3) وكل وجدان حظ لا ثبات له
(4) فإن معناه في التحقيق مقدان
(5) يا عامر للخراب الدهر مجتاهدا
(6) بالله هل لخراب عمر عمران
